In-Depth Analysis of Different Industries in the United States and Canada

In today’s fast-paced economic landscape, there are always interesting industry developments taking place in nations like Canada and the United States. As of 2023, the IMF estimates that the North American economy is ranked second globally for nominal GDP, whilst it tops the rankings if you look at the GDP per capita PPP. Having been a world leading economy for much of the last century, this region certainly possesses a rich history of economic dominance. Within the continent, the United States and Canada stand out as economic powers, with both possessing diverse, thriving industries.

From technology and entertainment to healthcare and finance, these two countries offer unique insights into the global business ecosystem – though they often work in tandem, sometimes these nations have opposing ideas when it comes to the operation of their industries. Let’s take a closer look and assess why these industries are so vital for the continued success of the economy in both the United States and Canada.

Technology and Innovation

Silicon Valley remains the epicenter of technological innovation not just in North America, but across the globe. While it’s true that other technology hotbeds such as Singapore and Shenzhen have emerged in recent decades, the home of market trailblazers Apple, Google and Facebook remains as integral as ever. In addition to this famed tech valley in California, other areas of the United States and Canada are developing into promising players in the industry. Austin, Texas is recognized as a key center for artificial intelligence development – the state is home to numerous innovative AI start-ups, and it is widely accepted that the AI research program at the University of Texas is world leading.

Further north, Canadian cities have also joined the innovation race. Vancouver has been named one of the top ten ‘cleantech’ clusters in the world, with many companies there focussing on technology to address the global environmental situation. Whilst it’s clear that Asia and Europe are starting to catch up, the top five leading tech companies in the world remain North American, highlighting that the region remains comfortable at the top of the tech tree.

Entertainment and Media

North America and the entertainment industry go hand in hand. Whether you look at the impact that Hollywood has had on global cinema, or the worldwide popularity of American and Canadian popstars such as Drake, Beyoncé and Taylor Swift – the industry appears to be going from strength to strength. Statista puts the total revenue generated in 2022 from entertainment in North America at an impressive $9.38 billion, highlighting the scale of this booming sector. As well as the traditional forms of media like film, TV and music, the continued success of the industry can be put down to the development of innovative new entertainment forms that are proving particularly popular with younger audiences.

The emergence of an exciting iGaming industry has revolutionized gaming, providing expansive multiplayer games and fast withdrawal online casinos to a huge player base. With continued changes in the world of iGaming – including the relatively recent legalization of online gambling in Ontario and Alberta – this exciting aspect of the entertainment industry is now a massive component of the economy in both Canada and the US.

Healthcare

When it comes to healthcare, the type of system used to maintain public health in Canada and the United States contrasts quite significantly. Canada has a publicly funded healthcare system (Medicare) which is paid for using taxes collected by the Canadian government, and provides universal coverage for essential care to all Canadians. In contrast, the United States operates a mainly private healthcare system, in which healthcare costs are covered by the individual’s health insurance. It’s common for Americans to receive health insurance through their employers – however many of those on higher incomes will purchase individual plans for improved healthcare, while around 26 million Americans have no health insurance whatsoever.

The US government has also set up Medicaid, a publicly funded health insurance program, which provides free or low-cost coverage for around 88 million low-income people. These two countries are a great example of two contrasting ways to provide public healthcare, though it’s certain that the Canadian system provides a fairer system by allowing all citizens access to the same quality of care. While certain government backed insurance programs are in place in the United States, the quality of care is not universal, and it remains that those with deeper pockets are provided superior care to those on lower incomes.

Finance and Banking

The commercial banking industry is the largest industry by revenue in both the United States and Canada, with a staggering combined revenue of around $1.6 trillion forecast for 2024. This highlights the critical role that the finance sector continues to play in both countries – both internally and on the international stage. North America is home to several leading global financial centers such as New York and Toronto. These cities are home to a huge concentration of banks, investment firms, hedge funds and fintech companies and are constantly at the cutting edge of financial innovation.

New York based banks JP Morgan Chase and the Bank of America lead the way in terms of global market capitalization, and as the main supplier of credit to businesses and individuals, they are essential to the success of the American economy. While being home to giants of the traditional banking world, the region has also been at the forefront of the fintech revolution in recent years. Being home to burgeoning fintech hotspots like Vancouver and San Francisco, it looks as though the United States and Canada will continue to be key players on the global finance stage.

The United States and Canada present a unique group of industries that continue to develop and flourish. These key industries are at the heart of the region’s constant economic growth, maintaining their competitiveness on the global stage. As these vital industries continue to evolve, it is imperative that governments and businesses alike continue to drive innovation to ensure they do not get left behind.
