By definition, it is a person who practices survivalism and who has prepared themselves by stocking food, water, etc. in order to be ready when something major happens.

So you want to know if you have what it takes to survive, right?
We’ll go through a series of the basic skill sets that you will need to know in order to call yourself a survivalist.

But don’t worry, just because you don’t know something, doesn’t mean you can’t learn!
It’s never too late to learn these skills.

Essential Skills for a Survivalist:

Shelter

We have shelter listed as the top priority essential to survival.

You’ll need to learn how to to build a shelter, find a good location for shelter, or find options to remove yourself from direct exposure from the elements.

First and foremost, make sure it is in a safe position and away from anything potentially hazardous.

Shelter can be made in the form of a tent, tarps, debris, tree branches, a cave, or anything you could possibly think of.

The key is to be creative and use the materials are around and available to you.
You are not trying to win an award for most attractive house, you are trying to protect yourself.

Water

Not only do you need to learn how to find water, but you’ll also need to be able to purify the water so that it is safe and drinkable.

Chances are that unless you’ve got a big water source with steady flowing water, you may run out so you’ll need to find alternate areas for water.

Know the different ways to purify your water whether it be boiling it, using a water filter, or anything else.

Water is extremely essential for your body to survive.
This needs to be a skill that you can master.

Food

Once you’ve got your water, food comes next. You can’t survive when you’re famished.

Learn how to grow your own food, catch fish, hunt animals, and even learn what plants are safe to eat and what plants you need to stay away from.

There are even certain insects that you can eat, so we suggest you research your area and learn what may be available to you.

There are so many ways you can provide nourishment; find what is right for you or your family.

First Aid

Injuries can take you from an OK situation to a life threatening position.

You need to know at least some basic first aid skills to get through a dangerous situation.

There are many guides available that teach how to set a broken bone, keeping a wound clean and closed, or even signs/treatments for hypothermia or heat exhaustion.

You don’t have to be an expert, but having this knowledge could save a life out in the harsh elements.

Fires will keep you warm, it can serve as a signal to a search crew, it can cook your food, and it provides light during the night.

With a little research, you can learn how to start a fire in many different ways.

Whether it be firearms, knives, hand to hand combat, or even a sharpened stick, you’ll be glad you prepared.

A lot of information has been covered throughout this journey.
Remember that the main skills you need to start out with are shelter, water, food, first aid, fire, and defense.
