Survival is a basic human instinct, which means that no matter the circumstances, you dig deep into the skill that you have learned in the past to help you survive. One way to be prepared is to widen your experience in these types of situations. I am an avid gamer, and I have always loved playing survival games. They offer a great story-based adventure and the way that you play the game often determines whether your character lives or dies.

In the past few years, more of these types of games have been released, so I decided to create a list of the best games to play to become an expert survivalist. Not all of the games on this list are video games, but they are games that can help you learn to survive.

Don’t Starve

“Don’t Starve” is a game that places you in the middle of the wilderness with nothing. You need to find firewood to create a fire to keep you warm and food so that you don’t starve. The key is that you need to find all of the materials that you need to survive the night before the sun sets. Once the sun goes down, primal animals become active on the island, so you need to have a safe place to rest for the night. If you fail to survive, you will need to start all over again.

Zombie Survival Board Game

This is a great board game that will get you and your friends talking about what you would need to do to survive a zombie apocalypse. In the game, you need to choose the provisions to have in your home so that you are prepared. Then, you have to protect your family and keep all of the entrances into the home barricaded. How long will you be able to survive?

Fallout New Vegas

“Fallout New Vegas” takes place after the events of a nuclear war. You wake up in Las Vegas, but the world is now more hostile than ever. There are raiders around every corner, wild animals, and even super mutants who are lurking in the shadows to attack. The key is survival, and you need to scavenge to find food, find clean water, weapons, ammo, and armor. Life after the fallout from the nuclear war is rough, but with the right set of survival skills, you can begin again.

The Last of Us

Another game that you can play to become an expert survivalist is “The Last of Us.” The game takes place in a post-apocalyptic world, and the goal is to get Ellie, a little girl, out of the quarantine zone. There are a number of threats that you will face along the way, resources are scarce, but surviving is the only option. Every decision that you make in the game will affect whether you can get Ellie to safety or not.

The Walking Dead Game from Telltale

This game is loosely based on the television show and comic called “The Walking Dead.” The world is infected with zombies, and you need to protect yourself and a little girl who came into your life. There are zombies and raiders everywhere, and every choice that you make will change what happens, so you need to use your survival skills to scavenge and survive.

Miasmata

If you have ever wondered how you would fare on a dessert island, well “Miasmata” gives you the opportunity to find out. When you wake up, you find that you are the only one alive on the island, and you are inflicted with a deadly virus. Survival is key, but to do so, you must find a cure. You know some science, so you begin collecting plants, but as you explore, make sure to stay hydrated.

Dying Light

If you are looking for a survival game that is a little brighter than the ones set in a wasteland, then Dying Light may be right up your alley. It is a survival game that is set in the near future in a city that has been infected by a zombie plague. You are not alone, but you must work together in order to survive.

Paintball

The last game on this list that I feel is a critical game to play to become an expert survivalist is not a video game or a board game at all. In fact, it is a seemingly simple game of paintball. Imagine the paintballs were real bullets and that the opposing team was an army of raiders looking to take over your camp. This game can help you become aware of your surroundings and create a strategy that can help you survive.

What are some other games that should be on this list?
