I am retired from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. While working with the Department, I heard a lot of odd stories from hunters and fisherman. Some of the hunters and fisherman knew me from the local news as a paranormal investigator. I would hear stories of hunters seeing strange lights flying about during their hunting trips. I heard about sightings of Bigfoot in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. One of the strangest stories I heard from a hunter is that while he was hunting for bear near Loon Lake Ranger District in Pollock Pines, he saw high in the trees a creature with large bird wings, a head like an eagle, scaly skin, large claws, long beak and a tail that can only be described as either a long lizard tail or a dragon tail. Questioning the hunter more, he told me that the tail must have been 20 feet long. The creature had a 25-feet wingspan. The head on the creature looked like an eagle that was covered in small horns. The hunter scared to his wits, fired a shot into the sky and this enormous creature flew off. The hunter told me that this happened in 1992 and it was the scariest moment of his life. When he told me about this creature, I had no idea what he could have seen. In my research on cryptids, the closest creature that was described by the hunter was a cryptid called the Snallygaster. If this was a Snallygaster, it’s a long way from home. In the 18th century this creature was reported in Frederick County, Maryland. A settlement with German immigrants. The immigrants that settled in this county complained about being terrorized by a monster that they would call a “Schneller Geist”. The meaning of this name is “quick ghost” in German. The immigrants said the creature was half-bird and half-reptile. The beak on this creature was filled with razor-sharp teeth. The immigrants claimed this cryptid would swoop down from the sky and snatch away the immigrant’s children. Like the Chupacabra, this creature also would suck out the blood of its victims. Someone came up with the idea if you painted seven-pointed stars on your homes or barns, this will keep the monster away from your family.

Skeptics point out that most likely the story of the Snallygaster was created to scare freed slaves. True believers of this monster will tell you that countless locals saw this creature in their backwoods. They all describe the creature in a similar way, as having enormous wings, long-pointed bill, claws like steel hooks. Some even say that it has an eye in the center of its forehead. The hunter I talked to, did not mention that he saw an eye in the center of its head. Locals also stated that they knew when the creature would be coming, because they could hear in the distance something that sounded like a locomotive whistle. That sound was not a locomotive, but it was the sound of the monster known only as the Snallygaster. An interesting fact about the Snallygaster is that it stirred up so much publicity that the Smithsonian Institute put up an award for its capture. U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt reportedly considered postponing an African safari to personally hunt the beast. Skeptics also point out that newspaper journalists George C. Rhoderick and reporter Ralph S. Wolfe created this hoax to draw up more business and a larger readership. They came up with the idea from German folklore and the sightings of the Jersey Devil that was happening in the Pine Barrens in New Jersey.

The hunter I talked to, seemed sincere in his story. He mentioned that he told a few of his buddies and they laughed at him and mocked him. The hunter says after that happened, he kept the story a secret, until now. He felt that since I was a paranormal investigator, I would be open minded. I do believe the hunter saw something that was quite unusual. I know for a fact that strange things are seen in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. In the Sierra Nevada Mountains, you have the Green Valley Vortex that has ghostly activity, a UFO landing and a Bigfoot sighting. There is an area of the Sierra Nevada Mountains that dogmen or werewolves are seen. Legend has it that in ancient times a group of Bigfoot went to war with the native Americans in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. While I worked at the Department of Fish and Wildlife, I oversaw the Scientific Collecting program. An application for Scientific Collecting came in, in which a group of scientists wanted to capture a Bigfoot for study. The application was denied. Don’t forget you have a lake serpent named Tessie swimming around Lake Tahoe. Yes, Sierra Nevada Mountains is a very creepy place that has its share of high strangeness. At a later time, I talked with the hunter and told him that his description was very close to a Snallygaster. The hunter looked at some of the depictions of the Snallygaster and he confirmed that is exactly what he saw.

Special Note: There are a lot of UFO sightings in and around the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The Sierra Nevada Mountains is part of gold country and overlaps into the mysterious Nevada Triangle. UFOs or UAPs, whatever you want to call them, seem to be attracted to areas with large deposits of gold and UFOs/UAPs are known to conduct surveillance on nuclear missile sites. I believe that the Sierra Nevada Mountains is an active paranormal hotspot due to hidden interdimensional portals. If there was a Snallygaster in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, it may have come from a portal that extended from Maryland to California. My theory is that the Snallygaster may have ventured from Maryland to the Bridgewater Triangle, roughly 300 miles away, entered a portal that took it to the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The Bridgewater Triangle is another place of high strangeness, from sightings of UFOs/UAPs to Bigfoot to Shadow People to Thunderbirds to Pukwudgies. The Snallygaster may have been a Bridgewater Triangle Thunderbird. Of course, the Snallygaster could have been something natural, a misidentification. Perhaps the hunter saw an Eagle? Maybe he saw an escaped Hammerhead Bat from the local zoo? All I know the hunter, seemed sincere and was consistent with his story. Like I said previously, I believe he saw something.
