SEND IN THE DRONES! Russian Bases Under Siege By Improvised Mystery Bombers

The Russian Ministry of Defense has released a statement regarding what they refer to as a terrorist attack. Their security forces stationed at the Syrian Khmeimim air base and Russian Naval CSS point in the city of Tartus defeated a nighttime offensive. Their enemy stuck “with massive application of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) through the night of 5th – 6th January 2018.” Two days prior, a local Islamic faction performed a mortar assault on the base, killing two and injuring ten others.

In the MoD statement, they said this was the “first time that terrorists massively used unmanned combat aerial vehicles of an aircraft type that were launched from a distance of more than 50 kilometers, and operated using GPS satellite navigation coordinates.”

According to the official report, Russia’s air defense systems detected “13 unidentified small-size air targets at a significant distance” approaching the bases. This was a two-pronged attack in which ten assault drones targeted the air base while three others flew toward the naval base. The improvised attack drones were armed with unguided mortar rounds which would explode upon impact, powered by their own downward momentum.

Their statement continues, “Terrorists’ aircraft-type drones carried explosive devices with foreign detonating fuses. The Russian specialists are determining supply channels, through which terrorists had received the technologies and devices, as well as examining type and origin of explosive compounds used in the IEDs. The fact of usage of strike aircraft-type drones by terrorists is the evidence that militants have received technologies to carry out terrorist attacks using such UAVs in any country.”

In addition, it is suspected that they received assistance from a foreign power capable of satellite guidance which may have allowed the drones to strike from roughly 62 miles, another first.

Russia’s MoD maintains that the attack was impossible without the help of a nation advanced enough to apply satellite navigation. While no official suspect was named in the statement, the representative noted that it was strange to see a United States Navy’s Boeing P-8 Poseidon, and intelligence aircraft, making a loop over the Mediterranean Sea near the two attacked bases during the attack.

The Pentagon’s Marine Major Adrian Rankine-Galloway categorically denied any U.S. or coalition involvement, calling such insinuations “utterly irresponsible.”

The Ministry of Defense has since then declared that the attack was made by Turkish-backed rebel forces. Despite some productive cooperation and recent S400 Triumph Anti-Air Missile System sales, Russia and Iran are at a significant conflict of interest in Syria. Turkey has long backed key rebel groups in the once-beautiful country, while Russia and Iran steadfastly support Bashar Al Assad’s elected government.
