I remember working for a while in America back in the ’80′s and in true Aussie innocence being amazed and puzzled about the attitude white Americans had toward blacks.

In my innocence I treated everyone I came across as a person – just like myself, and seemed able to get on with anyone.

Naturally, as I looked back on things from a more worldly-wise place I can understand why I was put in charge of a road-gang made up (except for myself) entirely of blacks.

They pulled the wool over my eyes many times, I found it amusing and called them on it in a way that left the dumb white Aussie looking a real patsy.

In the end those men did a power of work and were happy doing it.

Their incessant rapping about “the man” or “the cops” over time changed into happy normal songs.

The self-talk path to helplessness was broken and they gained self-respect.

You need to know they are just like us with all the same needs and wants and respond to kindness as we all do.

I found white Americans were really perplexed and at first wanted to ship this traitorious Aussie home on the next flight.

Many on the work gang had no homes and lived in cars, for those men getting a job was unbeliveable and they had no idea how to do a day’s work.

They had never been allowed to, nor was it ever expected.

Tears were shed as I ran out of time on my visa, but I will always think fondly of those men.
