Prepping With Pennies: 3 Tips for Frugal Survival

The prepper lifestyle has become increasingly popular since the economic crash of 2008. Millions of Americans lost everything, while others sense the growing police state the U.S. is becoming. Preppers are determined to survive and prosper regardless of what’s happening around them. Those who are new to prepping may not know where to start or how to afford the things they’ll need to maintain their lives and liberty. These three tips will help those starting from scratch and on a limited budget.

Personal Protection

The federal government continues its push to enact stricter gun control measures, particularly when it comes to automatic rifles. God forbid the situation ever comes to fruition, but forced Ebola vaccinations are already being pushed by the National Institute of Health. Veteran preppers already know about the existence of FEMA camps, which were built for Americans who refuse to comply with and endorse government tyranny. The only realistic chance you have to fight full-fledged martial law is with automatic rifles. The questions are how and where to get them.

Keep in mind automatic rifles are completely legal to buy and own in 42 U.S. states. Purchasing them is cheap and easy for those willing to do a little leg work. Companies like Legion Arms and Arms of America sell parts kits for both AK-47s and AR-15s. These kits are completely legal to purchase pursuant to the Gun Control Act of 1968. The caveat is that most of them will not come with the receiver. No problem.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms does not consider the 80 percent lower receiver to be “firearms.” Therefore, you can purchase the parts kit and your receiver separately, then assemble the rifle yourself (or with the help of a military veteran or gun shop owner). The best option for a receiver is to buy an untraceable 3D printed one for as little as $70. You can expect to pay between $400 and $500 for everything, which is far less than you’d pay for an AR-15 outright. All of this can be done without any background checks.

Food and Water

Food will become a valuable and scarce commodity in a SHTF scenario, so it’s best to stock up before it’s too late.

Find a friend or family member with a Costco or Sam’s Club card and immediately buy a few 50-pound bags of rice and pinto beans. White rice will keep for up to five years, while beans last indefinitely. Also purchase a few of the largest bags of salt, sugar, raw oats, pepper and olive oil you can find. Stock up on canned meats and vegetables for ready-to-eat meals. It’s also a good idea to learn about box gardening to grow various fruits and vegetables.

Purchase at least one fishing pole, several boxes of hooks, replacement line and a few jars of salmon eggs for bait. Fresh fish will be very tasty a year or more into martial law when all your canned meat runs out.

But I’m Broke

You want to prepare for the worst, but simply do not have the funds to do so. This is where you have to get creative. Increase the number of deductions on your W4 form at work or even claim exempt. This will instantly create more income, as the government will withhold less money from each paycheck. You may owe the government money next April, but the world may not even exist by then.

Those currently receiving monthly payments from a structured settlement or annuity can consider selling their future payments to a company such as J.G. Wentworth for a lump of cash now. This will help provide the funds you need to get started. Once you fully embrace the prepper life, consider selling your material items like HD TVs, golf clubs and other stuff that will do you no good when the SHTF. Finally, pick up a copy of the SAS Survival Handbook by John Wiseman.

Completing all the aforementioned tasks will make you more prepared for a SHTF scenario than most people. But the process will be ongoing until that time comes.
